This historic downtown hotel offers a beautiful lobby, excellent dining, and a prime location, though guests report conflicting experiences with room updates and basic maintenance.
This used to be my go to, favorite hotel in downtown Columbus. Have had so many memorable stays. Birthday for my niece, anniversary for my in-laws, concerts, shows etc. There is no longer a lounge bar (sat with Ceasar Milan before his show), had a custom cake in the lounge for my in-laws anniversary and would have a night cap before the Arnold pump and run. Room is not up to standard & the closing of the lounge so disappointing. We would come here just for a night away to enjoy the roof top pool. Saw wedding parties etc. Very nostalgic and upset about the decline.
Where to begin. Columbus native 40+ years. Periodically my spouse and I take off for the weekend locally just to take a break. We enjoy staying in our city, Columbus. Downtown. Instead of Air BnB... i wanted to stay close to the roots of this city. Never stayed at the Renaissance before. I thought it be cool for the history and nostalgia of it all. I paid what I felt reasonable price until I stayed over the weekend. DISAPPOINTED. Little things that clearly are just thought to be a non issue. For the price we paid, can you lubricate or oil the elevator doors?? Toilet not functioning properly, sounds like a garbage disposal when flushing. The fact that's its a toilet from a movie theatre restroom. Might as well been a urinal. I mean come on Home Depot has them for cheap all day long... nice bathroom gross toilet. The thermostat didn't work properly and the room would not maintain temp. I did have friendly service from staff until our last night. Clearly the front desk was irritated and not wanting to either have decent customer skills or this job or line of work period. If you work 3rd or the late shift... pretend to be happy about it. Foul mood and bothered by simple question. I'm sure she gets asked the same questions a thousand times... as a customer i don't care, I'm asking and I deserve for the price of the weekend to be treated as such. The sarcasm given by the guest services employee was flip it. She seemed to have the notion I was ignorant or dim witted. That it wouldn't be noticed by me as grown and aware adult. Hotel is old and does need update. Most part we were comfortable and they did accommodate a drink order to my room. I was also given free razor and toothpaste as I forgot mine rushing to leave. There should also be something available later in the evening for dining..... like late in the evening. I won't be back...the history isn't worth the price or stay
We stayed in a suite for a local event that also included an unexpected weather event: the great polar vortex of '26. Other than a missed turndown request, everything was pretty decent. Other service requests were handled with expediency. I did have two issues, and they both involved the loo. First, the toilets in the room sit so low to the ground that every visit felt like an unexpected trust fall...I learned pretty quickly to brace for impact every time I sat down. Second, the combination of seat height and water depth introduced a physical scenario that half the population will never have to think about, and the other half will immediately understand. Let's just say I to engineer a solution each time I sat down to avoid learning exactly how cold that toilet water really was. Other than that, we'd stay here again.
I stayed at the Renaissance Columbus Downtown Hotel for a convention and we ended up getting snowed in when the weather turned. What could’ve been stressful was actually a great experience because of the staff. So many of them were there day after day, showing up with kindness, patience, and genuine care for the guests. They really went above and beyond to make sure everyone felt comfortable and taken care of. Huge thanks to the team for turning a wild situation into a memorable stay.
Delightful Downtown Stay That Really Honors Marriott Loyalty (and Dogs) During a recent family trip to Columbus, we stayed at the Renaissance Columbus Downtown and it quickly became our default choice for any future visits. The interiors are genuinely gorgeous, with a modern, upscale lobby and rooms that feel more boutique than cookie-cutter chain. Nick at the front desk deserves a special shout-out—he was warm, proactive, and made our Marriott loyalty feel truly valued with an excellent upgrade that made the stay feel special. The hotel works especially well for families and dog owners. The surrounding area is very dog-friendly, with a beautiful nearby dog park that’s easy to walk to, which is a huge plus when traveling with a pup. Dogs are treated as welcomed guests rather than an afterthought, and the staff are kind and genuinely friendly with pets. For a downtown property, that combination of convenience and pet-friendliness is rare and incredibly helpful. Amenities are another strong point. The pool and workout area are clean, attractive, and comfortable, with easy options for food delivery so you can relax without leaving the building. The dedicated Marriott loyalty breakfast area feels a notch above the usual—fantastic breakfast options in a calm space where status actually feels recognized. When we had a small issue with a room door not sliding properly, the staff responded incredibly quickly, politely, and efficiently, resolving things so quickly it was incredible, and on top of that gave us a very kind dessert in the room which has been unheard of in stays so far especially post COVID to have this kind of hospitality and kindness. Overall, this is the kind of property that makes you say, “Let’s just always stay here in Columbus.” It hits the sweet spot for families, business travelers, and dog owners alike. With the combination of excellent service, especially from Nick at the front desk, strong recognition of Marriott loyalty, and a genuinely comfortable, beautiful environment, this is an easy hotel to recommend and one we’d happily return to every time we’re in Columbus.
Great location, great service from the check in staff to the servers at the hotel bar. The rooms are a little out-dated, toilet seats are super low, complementary water isn’t offered in the room but you can ask for it at the front desk. The beds are comfortable so a good nights rest will be had here.
This would be a nice hotel if it was the cost of a 2-star and didnt have the additude of begging for spare change. Let's start with right of the bat that vallet is 45$ a day (no exceptions) and you are also supposed to tip? Where is that 45$ per person going if not towards the staff? Also if you accidently forgot your tooth brush dont worry! You can buy one for more than 5$. Oh! And breakfast 25$ per person no complimentary. That's just the start. Its basically a 2-star hotel with the cost of a 4-star. Disappointed is how I would describe my experience. There was oil or something in the elevator buttons and the wheelchair accessible areas were blocked off most of the time. The room was OK if you count for very visible paint problems and a stained bed.. The staff was absolutely wonderful and a joy to be around. The building itself is a problem. And charging so much for 4 pills of advil? You must have lost your mind! Its like the hotel is crawling asking for spare change heaven forbid you need a toothbrush youre out of luck unless you want to just keep shelling out money. But I want to reiterate this as heavily as I can the staff was an absolute delight! Professional and sweet!
I tried to get a presidential room, unfortunately all booked so I got the "Jr presidential " room and honestly for almost 600 bucks the room was aweful.. safe was broke and I called down because I didn't want charged for it. The heat in living room was hot, bedroom was cold. The bathroom was nice. The room i just thought be better for the price. Id rather just stay in a normal room. We ate dinner and breakfast down stairs and honestly the high light of the stay. Perfect staff, food was great and very affordable. Breakfast was all you can eat. Valet was also very friendly and they got the biggest tip. I didn't see a bell boy and I was sorta disappointed about that as I have a bad back and hard for me to carry stuff. I would stay here again but id just get a normal room
Beautiful hotel! Rooms were cleaned and well maintained. Lobby area was fantastic. The bar was next level. Very rarely do you see hotels like this anymore. The offerings were amazing! We will definitely stay again.
Terrible experience. I was traveling alone for business and was woken up at 5am by a loud knock on the door. I assumed it was a mistake and tried to go back to sleep—until someone opened my door and started to enter. They said, “I was told nobody would be in the room.” I called the front desk and they admitted they gave the wrong room number for a service request. They apologized, but that was it. This was a major violation of privacy and left me feeling extremely unsafe. I won’t be staying here again Edit: there is another review that mentions the same incident happening.
