The Westin Great Southern Columbus presents a mixed experience, combining historical charm with significant operational issues. Recent reviews highlight concerning problems with room cleanliness, functionality, and unresponsive customer service, alongside some positive feedback regarding the lobby and staff in certain instances. The hotel's age appears to be a factor contributing to ongoing maintenance concerns.
Stay at a lot of Westins and this one felt more like a Fairfield. The lobby/entrance is beautiful and smells great but stepping into the rooms feels like arriving at a different address. Most things are due to the age of the building and beyond management’s control but I am surprised for the price point that Marriott does not limit the age of their Westin-branded buildings. In one stay, I encountered soiled mattresses, moldy carpet air, and a loud heating unit that woke me up every time it turned on. At one point, I heard someone scan a room key, without first knocking, open my door, and when they were stopped by my door latch, re-swiped the key card and PUSHED THE DOOR HARDER. It sounded like it would break. Very alarming. Most of the staff were pleasant but this building is just too old to feel as relaxing as the Westins I’m used to.
This hotel is not fitting of a Westin. The room A/C did not work. Room key didn’t work. The tub didn’t drain. The carpets in the hall are stained. The location in downtown is not a good one. This place is a pass
I stayed here not too long ago with my company and had encountered an issue with my room. I went back downstairs and asked to speak with the manager. I met with Colin who was very sympathetic and understanding. He made some changes and immediately changed the experience, positively. During the process, Colin was very professional and SUPER accommodating! The Great Southern is very lucky to have someone who is very good at hospitality and customer service!! Thanks Colin!!
Disappointed! I am a healthcare worker and was required to come in to work and chose to stay here to avoid driving in the snow/getting to work safer since I live farther away. For the price I paid for two nights, my overall experience could have been a lot better. My biggest complaint was the thermostat in my room, during the coldest storm mind you, my room was 58 degrees and no hot air was blowing out. I reached out to the front desk about it and it took hours for the issue to be resolved. I work night shift so this made sleeping during the day nearly impossible. The room itself was very mid, I was all out of body wash on arrival, room service never came during my two night stay and overall there were just cheap toiletries that I feel should have been better for this to be considered a 4-star hotel. The front desk lady when I checked in had a poor demeanor and made me feel not welcome. The only positive I can think of for my stay here was the Italian restaurant downstairs, despite not having complementary breakfast (which again for it being a 4-star hotel, should have been provided) the service there was phenomenal and the ladies that served me were such dolls. They did offer plenty of options throughout the day that were delicious (a bit pricey) but I’ll take it. For the price point and what you get out of it and my service overall, I will not stay here again unfortunately and I recommend spending your money elsewhere.
This hotel is amazing; built in 1897..lots of history and charm. Its uniqueness makes almost every room different. Could the building use a little love.. yes, but it doesnt take away from its charm.
Stayed at the hotel over the weekend. Lobby is beautiful and charming. Bar is welcoming and offers typical food which was delicious. Our suite although small was a little outdated but accommodating. This is an old historic hotel so I was not expecting a modern spacious room. It could use a little freshening up, though, Housekeeping is in need of a better supervisor. There was no cream rinse, one tiny bottle and I mean tiny bottle of lotion and no refill of coffee cups on day 2 of our stay. All of this I can live with simply because I went to the lobby for assistance. What bothered me was the reaction of the night clerk. Excuse after excuse after excuse and all I wanted to do was inform her of the situation. Not good!
was told by the front desk person our stay was going to be $300 for 2 nights when we were charged $986, our room wasn’t part of the wedding block. we went to the front desk and he told us he’d add it as part of the wedding block….. he walked back to the back room and “asked the manager” if it was okay. he came back and said he had confirmed it was okay, I asked the front desk person 4 times “so your saying it’s $300 plus tax for 2 nights???” He said “yes” we were in shock how much the price lowered from the original charge of $986…… we stayed happy. a week later we were charged the full $986 so I called Thursday morning talked to someone and they told me they’d give me a call back after the figure out what when wrong. no one called me back. so I called back Friday morning….. talked to someone he told me the manager comes in @9 and he will talk to her. and I never got a call…. So I called back @3 and the girl talked to the manager that was there that night and he claims “no employee asked if it was okay”where did he go then ????HORRIBLE customer service. the girl told me it was a mistake on the employees end but there’s nothing they could do….. hmmmmm so we were stuck paying almost $700 more than what we were told multiple times because of an employee error WEIRD….. the have horrible customer service. The girl at the front desk was horribly rude and had so much attitude. I expect more out of a place like this.
The rooms are far too small for the price per night. At least, the staff are friendly and courteous, and there's Smash Buddies close by (amazing food). Other than that, we could've spent the same amount of money for something far grander... Nothing special about the hotel except for the lobby, and maybe the exterior.
It's ok. The hotel is nice. The beds are comfortable. The rooms are a little cramped with only one desk chair. Street noises at night from cars, motorcycles and people are loud. Overnight parking cost of $40 is a little steep.
The first room we were given when we checked in smelled like someone had just finished smoking a pack of cigarettes and the bathroom was really funky (old tub with greyish wear and tear on the bottom, mildew above the toilet, smelly). The receptionist gladly gave us another room which was significantly better but still not great. There were holes in our sheets, the AC made a really loud clanging noise, and the room smelled really strange. The carpet throughout the hotel was filthy and the furniture was pretty banged up. The ice machines didn’t work on most floors and one of the elevators stopped working the morning we checked out. The front desk was very apologetic but we definitely wouldn’t stay here again.
