The Westin Great Southern Columbus offers a historic experience in a prime downtown location, praised for its architecture and friendly staff. However, recent reviews highlight issues with room size, outdated features, parking difficulties, and inconsistent service, particularly regarding billing discrepancies and cleanliness concerns. Some guests also noted issues with room temperature regulation and outdated amenities.
The staff was the best part of the stay, hands down. I could have done without the false fire alarm at 1am and the crime scene across the street but it's a historic hotel, downtown. Ya sort of know what you're getting into. The rooms are very small (again, historic) but it's beautiful. The architecture is glorious and well maintained. The breakfast was nothing to write home about, but the ballroom is stunning!
I typically never write reviews but this one is very deserving of one and not in a good way. Upon checking in for my birthday weekend, keep in mind this was close to midnight and we were staying 2 nights. We used mobile check in and got in our room to find a VERY outdated room and things were misaligned and dirty. So, we went down to the front desk and the person we spoke with was incredibly rude and not hospitable at all. We thankfully spoke with someone else who was better and got a different room that was extremely outdated...again and the TV when using it would black out and not work well. Overall, considering this is considered a "luxury" hotel it is far from it. It's situated in a good spot to get around downtown and Short North but this place is in desperate need of renovations and new staff across the board.
Very disappointing experience. The room was not ready when we are checking in even at 4pm. The room was dark with virtually no natural sunlight throughout the day. The biggest issue, however, was parking. The front desk instructed us to use the onsite LAZ Parking garage at $35/day with unlimited in-and-out privileges. When we checked out, we incorrectly paid over $90 and had to exchange multiple emails with LAZ Parking to get the charge corrected. And LAZ Parking stated that there is no in and out privileges. A week later, I still received a PRRS Parking notice claiming I hadn't paid. It's unacceptable that guests have to resolve billing errors between the hotel and its parking vendor, then receive parking notices after the issue was supposedly fixed. This experience caused unnecessary stress and fell far below the service I expect from the Marriott and Westin brands.
Westin Hotel’s Great Southern, Columbus Ohio Mid-May 2026 I needed to be at a court hearing at the Common Pleas Court in Columbus, Ohio. Best choice: the Great Southern, now part of the Westin brand. The Great Southern is a two-block walk to the twin courthouses for Common Pleas (Civil, Criminal, Domestic) so it’s a sure and short walk from the hotel to the court. The room was simply furnished – no chair but a chaise lounge sofa; one USB port; no single-use plastics, a good blackout curtain, and a nightlight in the bathroom light switch. There’s a bar on site, and on the same block there’s Dempsey’s for pub food. Best thing for those on a budget who are arriving by air at CMH: the COTA bus #7 departs from the airport and stops in front of the hotel, for $2 (or a day pass costing $4.50). Note that the return trip is best taken at Mound and 4th Streets, about four blocks from the hotel. There’s a Dollar store four blocks from the hotel, and a broad selection of restaurants within a 15-minute walk. Cost for one night: Room Charge - Standard Retail $283.00 plus state ($22.64) and local taxes ($28.30) for a one-night total of $333.94. Perfectly reasonable in the area, especially for those with business at the courthouse. The room was clean, quiet, and accessible throughout. I was recognized as a Bonvoy member, was able to enter my room before check-in time without having to pay for the benefit. Check-out was seamless, and the front desk (Jennifer on check-in) was pleasant and efficient. Columbus was my home for more than 30 years, and it’s a wonderful place to visit. COSI is a ten-minute walk from the hotel; the marvelous Columbus Zoo is a 20-minute drive and always well worth it. While I hope I won’t need more court appearances, if I do, I’ll include Westin’s Great Southern Hotel in my list of possible hotels.
Everything about this place has been phenomenal. Small rooms at base price…yep. However I love it. I don’t need a big room. It was clean and comfortable. I will be back. The front desk staff and restaurant staff were amazing!!!
I was in town for a the Floetry/ Raheem DeVaughn concert at Palace. This hotel was close and is a work of art. It's beautiful inside the lobby. I found it was quite expensive to stay one night. It was over $300 including a breakfast from restaurant menu. I was unable to use my Bonvoy bonus points or military discount at front desk. I had to call customer care or download app. The valet staff were awesome and friendly. They all provided excellent customer service. The front desk staff and manager, Fifi (Fitima) were professional and informative. My accessibility room was on 3rd floor. I was surprised the room was small (thinking of cost). My bed was so close to entry door. The room was very clean and no weird odors. I appreciate a shower chair in bathroom. The bed was very comfortable and I slept great. I was surprised no microwave in room. The security guard warmed my food which was another floor. My server, Jasmine and cook in restaurant were awesome too. I really enjoyed my breakfast. Overall, I would stay here again, but sure I make a reservation to utilize my discounts. I'll post pics ? later.
I was able to interact with about five staff during my one night stay and every single person was friendly and helpful. The hotel was beautiful, it was very clean. The restaurant had decent food, not out of this world. But again, the service was friendly and timely. The rooms were small but clean and well appointed, and as expected for the Westin brand. For me, the location was excellent because we spent the night to enjoy a show at the southern theater which is attached and makes it very convenient. The architecture and historical detail is beautiful. And I always appreciate when the hotel cellebrates historical stories. This one didnt disappoint there either. I'd book here again.
Stay at a lot of Westins and this one felt more like a Fairfield. The lobby/entrance is beautiful and smells great but stepping into the rooms feels like arriving at a different address. Most things are due to the age of the building and beyond management’s control but I am surprised for the price point that Marriott does not limit the age of their Westin-branded buildings. In one stay, I encountered soiled mattresses, moldy carpet air, and a loud heating unit that woke me up every time it turned on. At one point, I heard someone scan a room key, without first knocking, open my door, and when they were stopped by my door latch, re-swiped the key card and PUSHED THE DOOR HARDER. It sounded like it would break. Very alarming. Most of the staff were pleasant but this building is just too old to feel as relaxing as the Westins I’m used to.
This hotel is not fitting of a Westin. The room A/C did not work. Room key didn’t work. The tub didn’t drain. The carpets in the hall are stained. The location in downtown is not a good one. This place is a pass
I stayed here not too long ago with my company and had encountered an issue with my room. I went back downstairs and asked to speak with the manager. I met with Colin who was very sympathetic and understanding. He made some changes and immediately changed the experience, positively. During the process, Colin was very professional and SUPER accommodating! The Great Southern is very lucky to have someone who is very good at hospitality and customer service!! Thanks Colin!!
